Am I the only one who thinks that the erotic romance industry is somewhat of a secret. At least it is until you have been initiated and then you can't imagine how you never noticed it in the first place. Now that I have finally been published I notice there is a huge community of writers and readers who support and praise each other.
I have girl friends. We talk. We gossip. We complain about and brag about our significant others but not once did we ever discuss reading a hot book.
I see the girls in the book store. The ones who sidle beside the erotica section pretending to look at a true crime novel when really they are just dying to pick up the new Opal Carew book. It makes me sad. It makes me mad that when I visit my favorite section of the book store (checking out my competition hee hee) that I get dirty looks. Usually I just shake my head but sometimes I get sassy. Sometimes I pick up one of the more provocative covers and hold it up for everyone to see. They are probably thinking shame on that girl. Really? Shame on them. Don't knock it 'til you try it people.
Speaking of giving things a try. Do you know what one of my favorite things to do is? Convert. By convert I mean turn non-erotica readers into erotica readers.
I confided in a good friend at work that I was actually trying to break into the industry. Needless to say I got the jaw drop and the subsequent "I didn't think you were that kind of girl" comment. Luckily she was a good friend or I would have smacked her.
Instead, I set her straight and lent her a couple of my favorite books. She was quite the happy camper on Monday morning when she pranced into work with a huge smile on her face after reading one of them.
So why the big secret? Ladies, embrace the hotness. Laugh about it. Enjoy it. Talking about how hot the new Gina Gordon short story is much more fun than talking about manicures or clothes. Boring!
Wishing you sexy dreams,
Gina
